Key Scriptures

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished .Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” -Matthew 5:17-20

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • Do you still value the Ten Commandments? Why or Why not?
  • What commandment are you looking forward to learning more about during this series?

Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.

  • Have you ever taken the Ten Commandments for granted? What would it mean if they didn’t exist in society?
  • If you had to sum up the 10 commandments into one commandment that would cover them all, what would it be? Provide scripture reference.
  • Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.” What does this mean? What is the relationship between Jesus’ teaching and the Old Testament?

Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.

  • Can you share a personal experience where aligning with the ten commandments brought clarity to a moral dilemma you were facing?
  • Do you struggle with a specific commandment? If so, how can you give that struggle to Jesus and Repent?

Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.

Father God, thank you so much for the morals you have set for us through the Ten Commandments. We pray we will always honor and value them and keep them written in our hearts. We pray that we will show others your love by our actions and behaviors and live morally and righteously in your name. We pray that as we begin this next series and learn more about the 10 Commandments that you will guide us and help us recognize the places we fall short so we can repent and give it to you Lord. We love you and thank you for this week. In Jesus name, Amen!

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.

Read Exodus 20 to prepare yourself for this series.
