Rest in a Busy Life

August 20, 2023

Key Scriptures

“Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27-28

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.” Hebrews 4:9-11

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • Do you make rest a priority in your week? If not, why? If so, why?
  • How do you look at the Sabbath? An obligation or a gift?

Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.

  • How does the Sabbath differ now than that of ancient times? Give Specific Biblical scripture references.
  • How do you think Rest was perceived by the Isrealites after God brought them out of Egypt?
  • In today’s society, we fill every pause with anything other than rest. What are you missing out on by doing this?

Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.

  • How do you currently renew your spirit? When was the last time you did so?
  • What can you “not do” this week to take time to Rest in the presence of God?

Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.

Father God. Thank you for your gift of Rest. Thank you for showing us what you meant by rest through your Son coming to fulfill the Law. We repent from not taking the time to rest in your presence. We repent from refusing to sit still long enough to hear your voice. Please forgive us for all the times you have tried to speak to us and we were too busy to listen. We ask you to remind us to rest. We pray you will remind us to put our phones down. We pray you will show us how to prioritize the most important things in our lives and say no to the other things you haven’t called us to do. We love you Lord and thank you for your forgiveness and the ability for us to start anew. In Jesus name, amen!

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.

  • Start your week off by giving it to God. Rest. Take in the Word of God and spend time with your family by having fun together.
  • Plan a fun activity with your family this week and commit to it. No Phones, no responsibilities.
