Key Scriptures

“You shall not commit adultery.” Exodus. 20:14

“You have heard that it was said, ’Do not commit adultery,’ but I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:27-28

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • Have you ever been involved in a fire or seen the destruction it can cause?
  • How does Hollywood glorify adultery? Do you think it influences others to think it’s no big deal?

Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.

  • The Hebrew word for adultery also refers to idolatrous worship. How is adultery and idolatrous worship similar?
  • How does sin go from a simple thought to the act of adultery? How can you guard yourself against those thoughts? Does the Bible have anything to say about this?
  • 1 Corinthians 6:18 says, “Flee from sexual immorality.” What does it mean to flee?

Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.

  • When you have faced temptation in the past, how did you overcome it?
  • How do you encourage someone who is playing with the sin of adultery or has even fallen into it?
  • For those of you who are married, what are practical ways to keep from falling into the trap of adultery?

Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.

  • Father God, We want to thank you yet again for the 10 commandments that you gave us so long ago. If everyone would keep the 10 Commandments, we would have a beautiful world, but we sin and fall short daily and that’s when your grace comes in. You pick us up out of the muck and mire and set us on the rock. We repent from our sin. We flee from them. We run as fast as we can and ask you to give us good discernment. If we have any triggers for temptation, we pray you will show us how to escape and give us the strength. Lord, for those who have fallen into this specific sin of adultery or have played with it, we pray for forgiveness. We pray you will help us to mend relationships and restore reputations. Only by your grace and mercy, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen!

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.

  • Plan a date night with your spouse,  just the two of you.
  • Set a time to pray with your spouse daily.
