Kill vs Murder

September 10, 2023

Key Scriptures

"You must not murder" (Ex. 20:13 NLT)

“I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrificed my life for the sheep.”

(John 10:14-15 NLT)

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • We are over halfway through the commandments. Which sermon has been the most memorable? What about it made it stick out?
  • Have you or any close relatives/friends ever served in the military? Tell us your/their story.

Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.

  • What is the difference between killing and murder?
  • Why does the King James version say “Kill,” but other translations say, “Murder?”
  • Define sacrifice. With that definition, how was Jesus’ death on the cross a sacrifice? What was the purpose of Christ’s sacrifice?

Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.

  • What have you had to sacrifice in your life? What made it a sacrifice?
  • After hearing examples of men in combat having a hard time killing the enemy, why do you think killing another is such a hard thing to do, even when it’s justified?

Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.

Father God. Thank you for the commandments you gave us so long ago. We are forever grateful for teaching us how to live. When we get it wrong you quickly correct us in love and mercy. You cover us in grace the moment we repent. Thank you for the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross because we have forgiveness through His name. Our lives wouldn’t be the same without you Jesus. We will worship your name forever. Lord, please protect our service members and their families while they are away. Protect not only their physical bodies but their minds and spirits too. Help them to stay strong in their faith as they face difficult tasks. In Jesus name, Amen!

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.

Thank a service member this week and tell them what their sacrifice means to you and your family.

Plan a moment with God this week to talk about the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Think about how your life would be different without it. Thank God for who He is and what He has done in your life.
