God’s Gym

Key Scriptures

“Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:8)

“For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:5-8)

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • What goal have you set in your life for yourself? How did you obtain that goal?
  • Have you ever failed at reaching your goal? What happened? Why do you think your plan failed?

Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.

  • How is developing our “spiritual man” comparable to that of an athlete training? What similarities do you see?
  • Can you recall the 7 different “things” you might find in God’s Gym? Which one do you need more work on?
  • How can you use Micah 6:8 as a gauge for Godly living?

Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.

  • Have you ever had a time in your life where you, “talked the talk,” but didn’t “walk the walk.” How is this dangerous when it comes to Godly living?
  • Do you have a verse that you recall often in your life? Why that verse?

Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.

  • Father God, we come to you today completely humbled by your power and presence. We fully submit to your authority and the purpose you have for our lives. We want to live Godly lives so that others around us want to know the reason, but most importantly, because you expect this of us. We so deeply love you Father God. We know we can’t do this on our own, or by our own will-power, so we pray that the Holy Spirit will convict us when we are towing the line. We pray that He will give us power to weed out the weakness of our flesh. We pray that we will live disciplined lives full of worship, fasting, and prayer. In Jesus name. Amen!

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.

  • Journal and Pray. If you fasted with us, spend time this week coming to God in prayer and thanking Him for the time spent together. Look through your prayer requests and see if there are any prayers answered and also reflect on your inner attitude towards your requests. Write down your thoughts.
  • Read all of 1 Timothy and reflect on the theme of Godliness throughout.
  • Come along somebody this week and share what God is doing in your life.
