Finding Grace in Life's Storms

November 12, 2023

Key Scriptures

“One day the LORD spoke to Jonah son of Am•a•tie. He said, “Go to Nineveh, that great city, and speak out against it; I am aware how wicked its people are.” Jonah, however, set out in the opposite direction in order to get away from the LORD.” (Jonah 1:1-6)

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • As we start our new series, “Jesus in the Prophets,” have you ever thought about Jesus being present in the Old Testament?
  • Do you see yourself in Jonah’s story? How so? What can you learn from Jonah in this season of life?

Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.

  • How can our sins place other people in harm’s way?
  • What does true repentance look like? When does God forgive us of our sins?
  • How do you see Jesus in the story of Jonah?

Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.

  • Do you believe in your heart that God is bigger than your mess? What do you need to surrender to God today?
  • Have you ever thought you knew what was best instead of obeying God?
  • When you have a decision to make, do you consult with God first or try to figure it out yourself?

Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.

  • Father God, thank you for Jonah’s testimony. Thank you for sending your word to help us not repeat the same mistakes. But even when we do repeat those mistakes, you forgive us when we repent. Your grace and mercy follows us throughout our lives. We want to live in accordance with your will God. We want to consult with you for every decision and obey when you ask us to move. Thank you Jesus for the life you have given us, and the eternal life to come for all those who repent and follow Jesus. It’s such a precious gift to us. In Jesus name. Amen.

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.

  • Spend this week consulting God about every decision you make. Even the small ones so you can get in the habit of relying on God.
  • Read the entire book of Jonah.
